A HUGE leap in coronavirus cases were recorded across East Lancashire as 140 new infections were announced.

Every borough bar the Ribble Valley, where only two new cases were recorded, reported at least 20 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, the period the latest data is available for.

The rural borough has now seen a total of 258 cases since the outbreak began in March.

In Blackburn with Darwen, 36 new cases were reported, bringing the area’s total up to 2,164.

In Rossendale 32 people tested positive for COVID-19, with the boroughs total number of cases reaching 479.

Pendle recorded the third highest increase, with 30 new infections reported in the borough. There has now been a total of 1,057 cases there.

Hyndburn and Burnley recorded 20 new cases each, reporting new totals of 652 cases and 816 cases respectively.

An announcement is expected on Friday regarding the latest lockdown measures across East Lancashire, as new restrictions were placed on parts of the North East on Thursday.
