NIGHTSAFE are celebrating the one year anniversary of their BBC DIY SOS makeover.

A year ago today, a group of volunteers from up and down the country put the finishing touches to the makeover at St Silas’ Church Parish Hall in Blackburn.

Children in Need and DIY SOS ran the project to help build six self-contained rooms, over two weeks, to create a supported housing project for homeless young adults

One year on, the accommodation is being used by six Blackburn and Darwen 16 to 24 year olds who have found themselves homeless, along with other projects housing a further 14 young adults.

CEO of Nightsafe Jan Larkin said: “I can remember the big reveal day last year as clearly as anything. To be shown around the building by Nick and Gabby and the team, you come out and see that sea of volunteers. It was just absolutely amazing.

“The key thing beyond that is we are still being supported by those volunteers if we need odd jobs doing or support for young people, those volunteers still come forward.”

The charity staff will be visiting Safe@Silas for a socially distanced celebration along with other members of the community who have helped the charity.

Jan added: “It’s been just the most amazing experience for us as its brought the whole community together.”
