BLACKBURN with Darwen has the second highest infection rate in the country after new cases of coronavirus nearly doubled in seven days.

The town recorded 177 new cases in the seven days to September 10, up from 92 in the previous seven days to September 3.

The town now has rates that are now higher than 100 cases per 100,000 ­— 118.2 up from 61.5.

Hyndburn also has rates higher than 100 cases per 100,000 ­— 114.8 up from 43.2 ­— placing it third in England for its rate. Coronavirus cases increased from 35 to 93 in the same time period.

The Government said that as of 9am on Sunday, there had been a further 3,330 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK. Overall, 368,504 cases have been confirmed.

The Government dashboard also said a further five people across the country had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Sunday. This brings the UK total to 41,628.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 57,400 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

In total, 210 of the 315 local authority areas in England recorded an increase in the weekly rate of new Covid-19 cases in the seven days to September 10.

The rate fell in 91 areas and was unchanged in 14 areas.
