A woman has been charged with assaulting an emergency worker after spitting in a police officer's face.

On Tuesday evening police in Burnley were called to Burnley Manchester Road train station after receiving reports that a woman had trespassed on the railway line and was causing some problems on the platform.

Officers initially arrested the woman for being drunk and disorderly and for trespassing, however during the arrest she spat in the officer's face.

British Transport Police were called to assist and she was subsequently charged with the assault offence as well as the two offences for which she was arrested.

A spokesperson for the BTP said: "A Burnley police officer attended Burnley Manchester Road as a woman had trespassed on the railway and was causing problems on the platform.

"She was arrested for being drunk and disorderly and trespass.

"During the arrest she spat in the face of the officer.

"As the offences occurred on the railway we took over the investigation and submitted a prosecution file.

"She has been charged with all the offences - including assault on an emergency worker - and remanded in custody for court on Wednesday morning."
