A police officer had to be taken to hospital after he was deliberately rammed by an uninsured driver.

At around 1.50pm on Thursday, while patrolling in Colne, a police officer was alerted to a blue Renault Clio suspected as having no insurance.

When the officer got out of his car in Knotts Lane to speak with the driver of the Clio, the driver steered at the officer, pinning him against his car door.

The Clio then sped off and a short time later crashed into another car in Wickworth Street.

A spokesperson for the police said: "At around 1.50pm on Thursday a uniformed officer exited his vehicle in Knotts Lane, Colne, and attempted to speak to the driver of a blue Renault Clio, which was showing up as having no insurance.

"The car was driven at the officer resulting in him being pinned against his car door.

"The Clio has then driven off and crashed into a stationary vehicle in Wickworth Street a short time later.

"The female occupant of the stationary vehicle has suffered minor injuries."

The police officer was taken to Burnley General Hospital with an injury to his arm.

No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing to locate the driver of the Clio.
