Students are celebrating after receiving GCSE and vocational results at Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School in Blackburn.
Exams were cancelled this summer due to the COVID—19 pandemic. Exam boards issued grades based on the teachers’ predictions.
Munira Khanjra achieved the top grade ‘9’ in thirteen subjects. She will be going on to study A Levels in Psychology, Chemistry, Biology and Sociology at TIGHS 6th Form in Blackburn.
Munira said, ‘I am overwhelmed to have achieved such incredible grades in all of my subjects and thrilled to be able to go on to college. After so much worry and confusion over the past few weeks, it is a massive relief to receive these grades.’
Khadija Musa was awarded the highest grade in eleven subjects and grade ‘8’ in two subjects. She will be going on to study A Levels in Psychology, Chemistry, Biology and Maths at TIGHS 6th Form. Khadija exclaimed, ‘Wow! What a relief! I feel so blessed to have so many amazing people in my life who have helped me to get to this moment.’
Mehroz Ashiq received the top grade ‘9’ in twelve subjects and grade ‘8’ in one subject. She will be going on to study A Levels in Computer Science, Further Maths and Chemistry at Cardinal Newman College.
Mehroz said, ‘It has been a really difficult summer. My thoughts are with everyone whose life has been affected by the pandemic. I am so grateful to my teachers for all of their efforts on my behalf. Without them, and the support and reassurance of my parents, I simply would not have these achievements today.’
At the school, 88% of students achieved GCSEs with grades 9-5 in English and Maths, whilst 74% achieved the English Baccalaureate. The average grade (points score) in the English Baccalaureate subjects was 6.9.
The English Baccalaureate recognises achievement in a range of academic and challenging subjects. It is awarded to students who achieve grades 9-5 in English, Maths, Science, a modern foreign language and History or Geography. Nationally, around 17% of students achieve the English Baccalaureate and the average grade in the English Baccalaureate subjects is 4.0.
