A NELSON and Colne College student spent the lockdown period mentoring others via WhatsApp, while waiting on the grades that have provided her with the next step towards her dream career.

Waheeda Khatun, from Burnley, achieved A*AA in Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics and will move on to the University of Manchester to study Medicine – one step closer to her aspiration of becoming a doctor.

During the pandemic, Waheeda put her time to good use by offering to mentor GCSE students. Initially putting out the message via WhatsApp to friends and family, word soon spread, and Waheeda found herself supporting teenagers in a wide range of subjects from Science and Mathematics to English and Humanities.

The 18-year-old was a student governor, attending Nelson and Colne College Group Board of Corporation meetings. She has also sought to better the experience of other students as president of the Student Hub at College.

Waheeda, formerly of Sir John Thursby Community College in Burnley, said: “The Pre-Professional Programme in Medicine was fantastic."
