WHAT would become a familiar part of Blackburn town centre takes shape in 1970.
The framework for the bridge over Ainsworth Street which would connect the new shopping centre with the market was being lifted into place. The height of the walkway was carefully calculated to ensure that double decker buses could safely pass underneath.
The aerial walkway would connect to the spiral ramp at the entrance to the market and near to St John’s Tavern.
Both the bridge and the spiral ramp were demolished when the Mall was developed and the market site became the home for the town’s new bus station.
