AN investigation is still ongoing into the cause of a fire at business units in Darwen.

Fire investigators were at the scene still on Saturday afternoon while an aerial platform and another crew looked for other areas of potential outbreaks of a blaze at the large industrial units on Kay Street.

A Lancashire Fire Service spokesman said: “We had crews there trying to dampen down any further hotspot areas in case the fire started again.

“There was a multi-agency meeting on Saturday and they seemed to be saying that some of the building were okay to enter and some business owners were able to salvage some stuff.

“The building control inspectors to see which parts of the area were safe to go in.

“There was a bit of disruption to roads as they are narrow streets and there was two engines there.”

Thick plumes of smoke could be seen for miles as the authorities battled the blaze.

At its height, there were firefighters from across the North-West in attendance and residents were being told to stay indoors.

It is still not known how the blaze started.

A Lancashire Fire Service spokesman added: “It is not thought that the fire was started deliberately.”
