COUPLES hosting weddings ceremonies in Blackburn with Darwen have been warned against holding receptions in their homes or gardens.

Parties are illegal because of the new local restrictions covering the borough as a coronavirus 'higher risk area'.

Previously couples could have up to 30 people at a wedding reception following the ceremony to celebrate their big day.

Government guidance is now that wedding receptions or parties should not happen while in Blackburn with Darwen, it is illegal to have people outside of your household coming into your home and garden.

People living outside the area may travel into Blackburn with Darwen to attend a wedding ceremony, but not go into a private home or garden afterwards.

Borough council leader Cllr Mohammed Khan said: "I know it is difficult not being able to celebrate weddings with family and friends but we must all work together to defeat this virus.

"Please do not hold receptions or parties, particularly in your home, and follow the Government guidance which is in place to save lives.”

The guidance will be reviewed on August 15 at the earliest.
