AN 81-year-old woman has been seriously injured following a crash in Nelson town centre.

The pensioner had been crossing Broadway, using the pelican crossing at, about 12.15pm today, when she was hit by an Audi Q5.

She suffered a number of serious injuries, including multiple fractures to her pelvis, leg, back, shoulder and chest, in the collision.

The pensioner was then taken to the Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Audi, a woman in her 50s, was not injured.

Broadway was closed to three hours while police and accident investigators attended the scene.

Officers are now appealing for the public's help with their investigations.

Sgt Mick Belfield, of Lancashire Police’s Tactical Operations Unit, said: “We are appealing for witnesses following a serious injury collision in Nelson today.

“We would encourage anyone with information to come forward and speak to police immediately.”
