TRIBUTES have been made to a devoted police officer from Clitheroe.

On July 2 the former CID officer died suddenly following a short illness.

John Calkeld Whitehead, who had the nickname of Bonce, will be remembered by many in the Ribble Valley.
The father-of-one served the Lancashire Constabulary for over 36 years in both uniform and plain clothes.

Following his graduation in 1975 he joined the police and adored his job and, according to his colleagues, he would leave no stone unturned in his quest to solve a crime.

John worked in CID and was popular and respected by colleagues and the communities in which he worked.

Leading up to his retirement, he served as an evidence exhibits officer.
He then delivered prescriptions for Lloyds Pharmacy and made many friends along the way.

Family said he was always kind, always fair, had time for everyone and enjoyed being in company.

He also loved his sports and played to a good standard in cricket, darts, pool and dominoes – practically everything but rugby, which he said was far too physical for him.

John had been well known for his footballing skills over the years, and following his retirement, loved nothing more than to indulge in his love of golfing, fishing and going to the races.

Another great hobby of his was decorating, and he and his great friend Ian Welsh would put their decorating skills to good use for their family and friends.

The much-loved and loving dad of Hannah - his baby Bounce, a well-loved brother of Anne and brother-in-law of Stephen, John was loved and will be missed by all his family.

Donations can be made in memory of John to North West Air Ambulance via memorygiving.com/johncalkeldwhitehead  where the following condolences have been left.
