Bowling greens across the borough will reopen today and the council says that there will be no charge for bowling clubs for this year.

Over the past few weeks, more businesses, services and activities have been restarting and this now includes the restarting of bowling practice with a shortened season running from 24 July – 25 September 2020 after the greens were closed in March due to coronavirus.

Time slots have been allocated to the clubs as usual so members of the public are reminded to only use bowling greens when they are not in use by club members. This will also help to manage social distancing.

Cllr Julie McManus, Cabinet Member for Community Services at Wirral Council, said: “Bowling greens reopening now allows for another activity to resume across the borough and for Wirral’s eager bowls club members and residents to get back to the green.

“As the borough emerges from lockdown, social interaction is something that many of us have missed during this time.

“Whilst we still need to keep safety at the forefront of our minds, resuming activities such as bowls will enable communities to return to the things they enjoy and will help us all with our physical and mental wellbeing.”

Club members and residents using bowling greens should make sure they adhere to safety measures including:

  • Wash hands before leaving home and after returning home
  • Only participate in practice, exercise and members only match play (matches to only take place between members of one club - no ‘home’ and ‘away’ teams to meet)
  • Do not share equipment with others
  • Do not shake hands or make physical contact with other players
  • Maintain social distancing
  • Only use the area with a maximum of 6 people on the green at any one time

Bowling greens should not be used by club members or residents if they or anyone in their household or bubble that has coronavirus or is showing Covid-19 symptoms or if they have been told to self-isolate by NHS test and trace.

All litter or discarded items must be taken away or disposed of properly by those using the area.

Club members should note that bowling pavilions will not be reopening at this time.
