A section of the M65 had to be closed this morning after a woman was spotted on a bridge over the carriageway.

At around 3.30am, police attended a concern for welfare call on the motorway bridge between Huncoat and Burnley.

Lancashire Road Police attended and traffic officers assisted in closing the carriageways.

The M65 eastbound from junction eight for Huncoat to junction 10 for Burnley was closed just before 4am, with the westbound carriageway at junction 10 closing shortly afterwards.

A spokesperson for the police said: "We attended a concern for welfare call at around 3.30am after receiving reports of a woman on the bridge of the M65.

"Police were at the scene for around two hours and the woman came down from the bridge at approximately 5.20am."

By 6am, both carriageways had reopened.
