Police patrols have been increased in East Lancashire after burglary took place in a rural village.

Officers are asking residents in Wiswell to remain on their guard and report any suspicious activity following a burglary at a property on Pendleton Road.

The incident is believed to have taken place between July 9 and July 22, while the residents of the property were away on holiday.

PC Paddy Bowdich of the neighbourhood policing team said: "Police are investigating a report of a burglary on Pendleton Road, Wiswell.

"We are asking local residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to us.

"Patrols have now been increased in the area."

Sgt Kev Day of the neighbourhood policing team said the residents returned home from their holiday on July 22 and found a window had been smashed.

He said: "The burglars have smashed their way into the main house and taken a number of items including jewellery.

"At this moment in time our enquiries are ongoing and we will be conducting forensic investigations.

"We do not know at this stage if any other items have been taken but we are asking anyone in the area who may have CCTV footage to come forward as well as any witnesses.

"We would also like to remind residents to keep their doors and windows locked at all times.

"If anyone has any information they may feel could assist our investigation please ring 101 quoting reference 0801 of July 22 or email RibbleValley.NPT@lancashire.pnn.police.uk."
