IN East Lancashire we’re no strangers to rain but there are times when even we get caught out.
This dramatic photograph was taken in 1970 and shows rising flood waters threatening the Three Brooks Mill off Rhoden Road in Oswaldtwistle. Workers at the mill had to be sent home for their own safety.
The mill got its name from the three streams which all run under and around the premises and torrential overnight rain had swollen all three to record levels causing the flooding.
One of East Lancashire’s many weaving mills, Three Brooks Mill was built in 1868 and at one time was owned by the Rhoden Dyeing Company.
Its 180-foot chimney was a landmark which was well -known in Oswaldtwistle. The chimney was demolished in 2003 and much of the mill site has been given over to housing.
