From Oscar winners, to hit TV shows- many places in East Lancashire have been used as filming locations.

The Kings Speech and A Christmas Carol are just some productions which were filmed in the region; Blackburn was even the setting of one of the world’s first Western’s.

Here are five films that were filmed in East Lancashire- how many did you know about?

The King’s Speech, (2010)

The King’s Speech dominated the 2011 Oscars, scooping best picture and a further three awards- and some scenes were filmed right here in East Lancashire.

The movie follows the life of King George VI as he battles a speech impediment before becoming king.

Queen Street Mill Textile Museum in Burnley was used to film many of the mill scenes in the Colin Firth movie.

A Christmas Carol, (2019)

Queen Street Mill also popped up in the BBC’s 2019 adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

The historic venue featured when Ebenezer Scrooge is taken back in time by the Ghost of Christmas Past.

’71, (2014)

Jack O’Connell stars as Gary Hook in this gritty movie, portraying the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland.

For two weeks, some streets in Blackburn were transformed into a fictional battleground. The Blackburn scenes were filled with fighting, gore and political tension.

Kidnapping by Indians (1899)

One of the world’s first western movie, Kidnapping By Indians, is said to have been filmed in Blackburn back in the 1800s.

Mitchell and Kenyon are the filmmakers behind the short film. Kidnapping By Indians, along with a collection of other movies by the duo, were discovered in 1994.

North and South (2004)

The BBC’s mini series North and South was filmed in many locations across the UK- including Burnley and Rossendale.

Several mill scenes in the show were filmed in these locations, including Helmshore Textile Museum in Rossendale. Queen Street Mill Textile Museum in Burnley.
