THIS historic photograph records the last day that steam trains would officially pull out of Blackburn Station carrying passengers.

The date was Sunday, August 4, 1968, and hundreds of enthusiasts spent time at the station to see these engineering giants pull away.

A series of ‘Farewell to Steam’ specials, were running that day. Our photograph shows engine no 48773 working with with engine no. 44781 to pull a 12-coach rail tour organised by the Locomotive Club of Great Britain which had set off from St Pancras in London that morning and would eventually arrive in Carlisle before heading back on the return journey with different locomotives.
