This was the dramatic scene in Darwen in September 1926 when the No.11 corporation tram from Hoddlesden ran out of control on the descent down Sudell Road and, unable to take the sharp bend at the bottom of the hill, crashed into a billiard hall on Bridge Street.
One man was killed and another died from his injuries the following day. Seven other people were hurt including the driver and conductor.
