AN animal-loving teenager from Westhoughton is on a mission to help animals in need, having raised around £50,000 for animal charities over the last nine years.

Scarlett Berry launched Berry’s Barking Bakery when she was eight in 2011.

The teen’s most recent endeavour has helped raise over £800 for an animal sanctuary in Egypt.

An auction was organised by Scarlett to help fund Support the Street Dogs of Dahab, which has been forced to close down, meaning over 100 street dogs need to be rehomed, with some being sent to Europe.

But the 16-year-old is hoping to raise even more money to help these animals find new homes, and she’s even taking in one of the dogs herself.

Scarlett said: “Even though we’ve raised this much, I can’t fully rest until more has been done, so we’re planning on doing a virtual marathon next.

“The sanctuary needs to raise £25,000, and they’ve managed just under £10,000 so far, so I want to do what I can.

“When we first heard the news about the sanctuary in Egypt we were looking on the website, and we saw one dog which was just gorgeous.

“We lost one of our dogs in January and it was so sad, so when we saw George we knew we had to have him.”

Scarlett, who has just left Bury Grammar School, began Barking Berry’s Bakery to bake dog biscuits for charity.

Since then she’s gone on to organise dog shows and charity events, with the help of her mum Sarah Dunscombe-Berry and other family members.

Scarlett said: “It’s not just about saving animals, I’ve made so many friends and met a lot of people, it brings different groups together.

“I will keep it going for as long as I live.

“I wanted to be a vet when I was younger but now I know what I’m good at, and what I’m not. I want to pursue animal law.

“I would like to change the way animals are treated universally, for example the situation in Egypt."
