A section of the M61 southbound has been closed following a crash between several vehicles including a heavy goods vehicle carrying horses.
Emergency services are currently attending the scene and the road has been closed between J6 and J5.
Drivers are advised to expect delays and a diversion has been established from J6.
A spokesman for Highways England said: "The M61 in Greater Manchester is currently closed southbound between J6 and J5 near Bolton due to a serious collision involving multiple vehicles including a HGV carrying horses.
"All emergency services including the North West Motorway Police Group are in attendance.
"Highways England has resources deployed to assist.
"Road users are advised to expect disruption and to allow extra journey time."
Transport for Greater Manchester have announced that delays are to be expected on Chorley Road.
A spokesman said: "M61 Southbound traffic stopped following a further incident between junction six to five.
"Delays are expected on A6 Chorley Road due to diverting traffic."
Drivers are urged to avoid the area.
