THIS photograph records a poignant moment in the history of Horwich.
Even the weather was suitably sombre on a late September day back in 1965 when the last train pulled into the station before it closed to passengers.
The station was on a branch from the Manchester to Preston line and by April the following year good services had also ceased to use the station.
The station itself had opened in 1870 - a fact recorded on the special plaque mounted on the front of the engine pulling the last passenger carriages.
As you can see, crowds turned out to witness the historic event.
The station was demolished and the site turned into a public park
