QUIZZES have proved very popular, especially in pubs and clubs, since they were launched in East Lancs in the mid-60s by Darwen Sports Council.

As might be expected, the first series, which ran for a few years, were all sports quizzes.

The Anchor pub, skippered by Tony Farrell, were king-pins in those early days. But the Swan Hotel, Catholic Club and Darwen Police always had good teams.

Pub quizzes caught on! Great Harwood Brass Band, captained by Jack Crompton, became Top Dogs in the area and led the way for several years.

General knowledge competitions took off and Thwaites ran very successful inter-pub and club general knowledge quiz leagues for years. Griffin and Darwen Cemetery were leading lights for years.

Music quizzes quickly become popular, with Burnley GS Old Boys to the fore. Local history quizzes followed on.

One of the top teams in East Lancs these days is certainly the Shoulder of Mutton at Holcombe who for years have topped the Bury General Knowledge League which covers the Rossendale Valley.

So, how about a Bygones picture quiz! Our first has a dozen photos of Darwen scenes by local artists over the years with a relevant question to accompany them.
