A PICTURE which featured in Bygones recently of the successful Blackburn Celtic football team which won the Mill Hill league prompted reader Derek Haworth to get his grandson Dan to send in some pictures of his own footballing days.
Derek went to school to Roe Lee Park and Darwen Grammar School, and was part of two very successful teams in the early Fifties who would have been rivals of Blackburn Celtic.
With Roe Lee, who played matches in Witton Park, former joiner Derek, who now lives in Mellor, won the Jubilee Shield in the 1951-2 season and played in the Blackburn school’s final at Ewood Park in 1953.
He was also a member of the Blackburn Olympic side in the 1953-4 season.
Derek was quite the sportsman and played for Salesbury Cricket Club for a number of years when he lived in the area.
If you have any photographs of your own sporting successes and would like to share them with Bygones readers, then do get in touch.
You can email team photographs along with details to bygones@nqnw.co.uk
