Police in Blackburn have issued a warning for those planning to participate in a Black Lives Matter demonstration on Monday.

UPDATE: Black Lives Matter: Blackburn protest postponed due to coronavirus concerns

Posting on social media, a spokesperson for the police said there would be a 'proportionate policing presence' for any event and hoped that anyone attending would work with officers to help maintain social distancing and keep any demonstrations peaceful.

The spokesperson said: "We are aware of the plans for a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Blackburn and we are working closely with the organisers and partners in the local authority to facilitate peaceful events.

"There will be a proportionate policing presence for any events.

"We know people want to make their voices heard.

"The right to lawful protest is key part of any democracy, which Lancashire Constabulary will continue to uphold and facilitate.

"However, coronavirus remains a deadly disease and there are still restrictions in place to prevent its spread, which include not gathering outside in groups of more than six people.

"So for whatever reason people want to come together, we ask that people continue to work with officers at this challenging time."

The police said they recognise there is an inconsistency in permitting such events to go ahead but want to urge the people of Blackburn that they are prioritising minimising risk of disorder occurring over enforcement of Covid-19 regulations.

The spokesperson added: "As we have throughout this health crisis, we will engage, explain, encourage and only, as a last resort, enforce.

"We stand alongside all those across the globe who are appalled and horrified by the way George Floyd lost his life.

"Justice and accountability should follow.".

Two peaceful demonstrations took place in Rawtenstall and Darwen last weekend.

The next BLM matter protest is planned to take place outside Blackburn Town Hall at 1pm on Monday
