A TEAM of runners from Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Blackburn, made an epic trip to help the Queen celebrate her birthday in 1967.
For the 14 pupils staged a relay race from the school to Windsor Castle to deliver a special birthday message.
They ran in teams for three days almost non stop to complete the 215 mile journey, averaging over 70 miles each day.
The whole school had turned out to send the relay team on its way.
When they arrived at Windsor Castle, Peter Mitchell, captain of the school’s cross country team who ran the last leg of the journey, presented the school’s message to Inspector R Smith of the Metropolitan Police who met them at the castle gates watched by his team mates.
The message was then shown to the Queen.
