MESSAGES telling women that they are overdue for a cervical screening check have been found to be fake.
Warnings have now been issued, urging women to ignore the text messages that they may have received as part of the sophisticated scam.
It is thought that the scammers are using the messages as a way to get hold of personal details.
A spokesman for the East Lancashire Hospitals Trust said: "Please be aware of possible text messaging scams.
"A scam has been circulating that tells patients they are overdue for cervical screening.
"The message asks patients to call a number and give personal details. "These messages are not from the NHS screening programme. If you do need to book an appointment for screening, please contact your GP."
You'll be sent an invitation letter in the post when it's time to book your cervical screening appointment.
Women due for a check will be told by means of a letter in the post which will explain hoe they can book.
