Police are thanking people in Blackburn for following advice and staying at home to celebrate Eid.

Officers in Blackburn and Darwen added that there had been "no reports of breaches of the rules."

Muslims around the world have begun celebrating Eid al-Fitr, a normally festive holiday marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, with millions under strict stay-at-home orders and many fearing renewed coronavirus outbreaks.

The three-day holiday is usually a time of travel, family get-togethers and lavish daytime feasts after weeks of dawn-to-dusk fasting.

But this year many can only celebrate at home with immediate family, with virus fears dampening the holiday spirit.

Police and other bodies had given advice to adhere to government guidelines on lockdown and social distancing.

Blackburn and Darwen Police posted: "Eid Mubarak to all those celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr in the town today, marking the end of Ramadan.

"We hope you have a memorable day celebrating with your families, despite the current restrictions.

"It is really pleasing to see that the community have been following the Government guidance and the advice from your local community leaders and there have been no reports of breaches of the rules that are designed to protect us all from this virus.

"We recognise the hard work and sacrifice that you have shown during the last 30 days, in not visiting Mosques, open spaces and the cemetary.

"We would like to pass on our sincere thanks for your help in curtailing this virus. You can be assured that all your efforts will have helped in saving lives and reducing the pressure on the NHS. Have a fantastic and safe day with your families."
