Former footballer Andy Cole is launching a new nationwide fund to help kidney patients after having faced a tough battle with kidney failure himself five years ago.

The legendary striker, 49, who played for England, Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers, hopes that funds raised will help to finance research into kidney disease, kidney transplants and efforts to support the mental health of patients.

According to Andy, the mental effect of kidney failure is one of the hardest aspects to cope with.

He said: “I’ve been mentally strong enough to play football, but this is the toughest battle I’ve ever had to deal with.

“I used to visit the doctor and make out I was fit and strong because I didn’t want to admit how hard it was, yet mentally, I was dying inside.

“I don’t want anyone to end up struggling like I did. The mental battle is bigger than the physical problem. Your mind is the most powerful thing in the world.”

Andy was first afflicted by kidney disease in 2015 and was lucky enough to receive a transplant from his nephew in 2017.

However, though his health has improved, this was not the end of Andy’s ordeal as transplants only last 10-15 years, while the mental effects can be equally difficult.

Andy said: “Transplant is not a cure, if it works, it gives a part of your life back and keeps you ticking over, but it’s a lot tougher than everyone makes out.

“We don’t really talk about kidneys because nobody understands them, but when they go wrong it can be fatal.”

The retired star, who is currently self-isolating due to the coronavirus outbreak, hopes that the new Andy Cole Fund, which he has set up with Kidney Research UK, will be able to raise at least half a million pounds over the next three years.

The organisations hope that enough funding will allow them to carry out research into making kidney transplants permanent.

Chief executive of Kidney Research UK, Sandra Currie, said: “We are so delighted that Andy is working with us to drive forward research and support to help those with kidney disease. It is inspiring that he is committed to making such a difference for other people.”
