A KIND-HEARTED musician has brought cheer and joy to the elderly residents of a care home by playing his bagpipes for all to hear.

Paul Burns, who plays bagpipes for Accrington Pipe Band, surprised residents at Hope House in Clayton-le-Moors when he turned up over the bank holiday weekend to perform a socially distanced concert for all to hear.

The deputy head teacher of St Andrew’s Primary in Oswaldtwistle played his bagpipes outside the front of the home while residents gathered outside to enjoy.

However this wasn’t the first time Mr Burns has brought out his bagpipes to cheer people up during lockdown, as the father-of-two has also been out and about in his hometown of Huncoat to play during the clap for carers applause which takes place every Thursday night.

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Mr Burns said: “I know that the residents have been on lockdown for a long time and it must be really hard for them and quite lonely without any visitors.

“I wanted to spend a little bit of time entertaining them to try and brighten their day, I'd hope that someone would do the same for me if I was in that situation.

“I had to ensure I kept all the correct social distancing measures of course but I could see on their faces how grateful they were and how much they were enjoying it.

“I'm glad I was able to help them and make a bit of a difference to their lives. And it was nice as a bit of a thank you for the carers at the home too as key workers.”

Mr Burns’ efforts were appreciated by all of the residents at the care home, many of who clapped along and enjoyed the show as they go through lockdown.

One resident, 99-year-old Evelyn Corris said: “It was absolutely fantastic, and I love every minute of it.”

husband and wife pat and Michael hill also both residents said: "It was lovely to hear such beautiful music especially amazing grace it's made our day"

Deputy Manager of the home, Jade Wheatcroft added: “Paul is a family member of mine from the Accrington pipe band who took time out of his day to come and cheer the residents at Hope House up.

“The residents absolutely loved it and danced along. Everyone was so happy and emotional we have made the most of tough times this bank holiday.”
