A park ranger saved a man from a clifftop - after playing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from his van.

Karl MacIver, 39, was patrolling a seaside beauty spot with the Monty Python classic blaring from his van's speakers when he spotted the man near the clifftop.

Ranger Karl saw the man was "clearly distressed" and dialled 999 for help before approaching the man and talking to him.

He sprang into action at the Nash Point beauty spot in South Wales after losing one of his friends just four months ago.

Dad-of-two Karl said: "It was only by freak chance really. I noticed him there.

"A close friend of mine took his own life just two days before Christmas. If I had been able to, I would have tried to talk him out of it. I couldn't help him back then, but I could try and help this guy now."

Karl told how he always plays Always Look on the Bright Side of Life because he wants people to try and bring a smile to people's faces.

"Otherwise the voice on the speaker is quite depressing and frighten the children.

He said: "I'm a positive person. I try and be cheerful. You've got to be, especially at the moment.

"There's a lot of boredom out there and morale is very low."

Karl admitted he received a ticking off from council bosses for his choice of music being "not really appropriate" - and has now taken compassionate leave from his role.

A Vale of Glamorgan council spokesperson said: "Karl remains a valued employee of this council and in his current role."

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: "Officers responded to a call of a man in distress at Nash Point in the Vale of Glamorgan. Officers attended and were able to take a 39 year-old man from Bridgend to hospital."
