BLACKBURN with Darwen Borough’s annual ‘Civic Sunday’ event has been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The celebration of the newly-installed Mayor was due to take place on Sunday May 24.

One of the normal highlights of the municipal year, it features a special service at Blackburn Cathedral and a short civic parade.

A new date will be set for later this year and discussions are ongoing about the format of mayor making and annual council which is due to take place on Thursday, May 21. This will also be rescheduled

Council leader Cllr Mohammed Khan said: “Civic Sunday is steeped in tradition and brings communities together. We are committed to staging it at the right time when it’s safe for people to gather. The amazing work of our public services is in the spotlight at the moment and it will be good to reflect on what they have done during these difficult times.”

Every year the work of public services in protecting the most vulnerable is acknowledged by the newly-installed mayor.
