A BAKER has made a cake for the NHS to show how much he appreciates their frontline work.

Saqib Qayum made the NHS themed cake and sent it to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

The former teacher made a six-layer victoria sponge coated with vanilla buttercream cake and a blue watercolour.

He said: “I made the cake to show my thanks and gratitude to the NHS during this challenging time.

“My sister was admitted to in February and expressed how kind and friendly all the staff were.

“I rang the main switchboard beforehand to discuss the possibility of a cake donation and they were grateful and gladly accepted.

“I left it for the clinical floor team who distributed it to A&E and the pediatrics department.”

The cake was appreciated by two NHS workers at the hospital who said it was the ‘best cake we’ve had’ and that ‘everyone loved it.”

Mr Qayum added: “I am very touched by that, thank you NHS.”

The humanities supply teacher from Nelson took part in the Hairy Bikers’ Chocolate Challenge in February.

The thirty-year-old did not make it past the first round, but still loves baking.

Before getting into baking, he spent four years in Japan as a teacher. While there, he started to miss cakes and desserts from England and turned to his mum for help.
