CORONATION Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh pretends to try out the new facilities as she opened the leisure centre at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel, Clayton-le-Moors in 2004.

The Church-born star was given a surprise when the hotel announced it was to make Maundy Relief, a Hyndburn-based charity of which she was a patron, its charity of the year.

Julie had set herself the challenge of raising £1,000 a week for the charity which helped the homeless and underprivileged in the borough.

She described the hotel’s charity choice to be “an early Christmas present”.
