WE look back at a time when roller skating took off at Darwen leisure centre in November 1978.

Youngster and grown-ups alike were already packing the large sports hall to capacity.

And the centre are considering starting up one more session to cope with demand.

Youngsters had started to queueing to take part up to an hour before the start of the session.

The hour-long session began at 4.30pm is held every Wednesday evening and there were three 45-minute sessions every Saturday afternoon.

The charge including the hire of roller skates was 45p for adults and 32p for juniors.

Those who did not fancy the thrills on wheels could also try their hand at archery and that was being run at the centre on Wednesday evenings.

It came after an £560,000 investment in the facility which had stirred some excitement and they were hoping to cater not only for the sporting pursuits.
