FRUSTRATED locals have been celebrating after the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) towed away abandoned and untaxed cars on their street.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Lancashire Telegraph that locals were ‘really happy’ about the move.

“We are all very pleased that the DVLA have turned up and taken away some of the cars,” he said.

“But why just after it was reported in the news? This has been going on for several years now and it’s a shame they couldn’t have dealt with it earlier.

“There are still several cars on the street.”

Residents on Dickens Street in Blackburn told the Lancashire Telegraph about inaction over the cars on Tuesday.

Some of the cars have, according to locals, been ‘smashed up’ and ‘burned out’ over the last few months.

A DVLA spokesman confirmed that four untaxed vehicles had been towed away from the street on Wednesday afternoon, but the majority of the cars were left untouched.

Officials from Blackburn with Darwen Council are expected to tell residents about their plans to deal with the issue in the coming weeks.

However, a spokesperson for the council said the responsibility for the remaining cars was with the DVLA and police – something which the DVLA reject.
