TAKEN in 1971, this aerial photograph looks down on the A6 roundabout which had just been created at Westhoughton.

To get your bearings, the Snydale water tower on Bolton Road Westhoughton, is in the top right of the photo.

This view of Chequerbent shows the A6 (Manchester Road) curving down from the top left to join the roundabout.

You can also make out the newly-constructed road running off the roundabout which would run under the M61 and later become Wigan Road.

In the bottom right of the picture you can follow the A6 as it heads off towards Four Lane Ends with Park Road running into the Molyneux estate and Westhoughton.

If you are familiar with the area, see if you can identify any of the buildings or streets from this bird’s eye view.
