A car was sent flying and smashed into two shop fronts leaving one woman in hospital and another in police custody.

The crash, which ended with a car on its roof, happened on Manchester Road in Nelson at around 10.30am on Sunday.

A 28-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle theft and drink driving following the crash, and another was taken to hospital with head injuries.

CCTV footage supplied to the Lancashire Telegraph by Majid Ali shows a car travelling along Manchester Road before it clips another vehicle, flips onto its roof and crashes into the side of a row of houses and shops.

Janet Barnes, who witnessed the aftermath of the crash, said: "The car had hit both the shop fronts and there was debris all over the road.

"The road was shut from Lomeshaye lights to St Marys Street."

Emergency services attended the scene and one woman was taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: "We were called at 10.16am to a crash involving two vehicles.

"We sent a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance and treated two patients, both female, at the scene.

"One female was taken to hospital."

A spokesperson for the police said: "We were called to an incident just before 10.30am on Sunday March 8 following reports of a collision between two cars on Manchester Road.

"We arrested a 28-year-old woman on suspicion of aggravated taking of a vehicle without consent and drink driving."
