An artist-in-residence at an Accrington gallery has won a prestigious award for a painting of cannulas in her daughter’s hand, during a visit to Manchester Children’s Hospital in 2018.

Catherine Lansdale, an artist in the Haworth Art Gallery Stable Artist Studios, was awarded the top £2000 prize for her watercolour painting named “Cannulas” as part of the 2020 Open Exhibition at HOME Manchester.

Dave Moutrey, Director and CEO of HOME, said: “We always thought that the Manchester Open would find an audience in our city but the number of people turning up to see this excellent exhibition has been truly extraordinary.

“To say that we are delighted by the record-breaking attendance is an understatement and a tribute to the quality of the work coming from our city of artists.”

The exhibition - the first of its kind in Manchester – allowed submissions by anyone living in Greater Manchester and featurs drawings, paintings, sculptures, textiles and photography.

HOME say it has been a “phenomenal success” with over 20,000 visitors so far and £18,000 worth of artwork sold.

Before taking up residency at the gallery Ms Lansdale taught art to schoolchildren, but now creates her own portrait artwork and runs ‘adult art’ workshops and drawing evenings at the Haworth Art Gallery.

The exhibition at HOME runs until 29 March.
