A TEAM of volunteers has spent the past 10 months crafting a new table for the Mayor's parlour.

The oak furniture started as a felled tree, which has been sawn, sanded and oiled in a meticulous process, which requires the wood to be kept at precise temperatures.

Bury Greenwood Group were commissioned to design the wooden table by the Mayor of Bury, Cllr Trevor Holt, and the Mayoress, Evelyn Holt.

Chairman of Greenmount Village Community, Alistair Waddell, who is one of the founders of the Bury Greenwood Group, said: "The material came from an old oak tree, estimated to be between 150-200 years old.

"It had to be felled because it was deemed to be dangerous."

The legs to the table came from a cherry tree in St Mary’s Park in Prestwich, and the brass plaque was manufactured in Bury.

Bury Greenwood Group was formed in June 2017, and is part of the national Men’s Sheds project, which aims to create opportunities for men to connect and create. The Bury group, based at The Barn in Philips Park, is made up of about 25 members.

The team were tasked with creating the table in Easter 2019, and it was presented to the Mayor on Friday.

Mr Waddell said: "The table fits really well in the parlour. It is the Mayor and Mayoress' gift to Bury.

"They were overjoyed with the finished product. It will certainly be a talking point for many years to come."

An inscription on the furniture reads that the table was presented to the Mayor and Mayoress on February 13, 2020, to commemorate their year in office.

The Mayor, Cllr Holt, said: "We were so excited about this. We went to visit the group last year and were so impressed with their work.

"A phenomenal amount of work has gone into making the table. It will be a permanent feature in the Mayor's parlour.

"We are very grateful to Bury Greenwood Group for making it for us."
