A DRIVER who failed to stop after a crash had drunk more than three times the legal alcohol limit.

Manchester magistrates heard how 62-year-old Robert Hitchin's reading was 119 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath — the legal limit is 35 microgrammes — when he was driving a Peugeot car on Brocklehurst Avenue, Bury, on January 24.

Hitchin, of Central Avenue, Bury, pleaded guilty to committing the offence and also failing to stop following a collision with a Vauxhall Astra on Parkhills Road, Bury.

He was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, ordered to participate in an alcohol treatment programme and must undertake 15 days of rehabilitation activities. He was also ordered to pay £207 in costs and charges and was banned from the roads for 28 months.

Thomas Forbes, aged 58, of Cumberland Close, Bury, pleaded guilty to committing the offences and was also ordered to pay a £122 victim surcharge.

A MOTORIST who drove a Ford Transit van without insurance has been fined £120 by Manchester magistrates.

Karl Taylor, aged 30, of Garnett Street, Ramsbottom, pleaded guilty to committing the offence when he drove the van in Cornwall Drive, Bury, on January 15.

Manchester magistrates heard how Waqar Hasan, aged 21, of Kingsbury Close, Tottington, was caught driving a VW Golf in Milkstone Road, Rochdale, on May 3 last year without a licence or insurance.

He admitted the offences and also driving after taking cocaine and cannabis and possessing the drugs.

Hasan denied handling the car, which was stolen, but was convicted following a trial.
