THE family of a former Blackburn magistrate have donated four specialist recliner chairs to East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust’s charity ELHT&Me in her memory.

The chairs for Ward B18 at Royal Blackburn Hospital were funded by donations in lieu of flowers at the funeral of 95-year-old Phyllis Gorton.

Mrs Gorton’s daughter, Fiona, said: “We were overwhelmed by the amount of money we received in donations. It showed us how special mum was to so many people and what everyone actually thought of her. She was a very special lady to so many people.”

Mrs Gorton served as a magistrate for 32 years, and was nominated as one of the recipients of Maundy Money from the Queen at Blackburn Cathedral in 2014, for her contribution to the local community.
