The Environment Agency has issued a warning for residents to take 'immediate action' for flood risks for the River Irwell and Whitewell Brook.

The warning comes as Storm Dennis batter the country with downpours and strong winds.

Flood warning are now in place properties on and adjacent to the A681 Bacup Road,Burnley Road between Riverside Park and Ashworth Road, and Piercy and Newchurch from Ashworth Road to Wood Lea Road.

A statement read: "River levels have risen rapidly as a result of heavy rainfall from Storm Dennis. Consequently, flooding of property is possible this evening, 15/02/20.

"We expect river levels to remain high throughout the weekend. We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are closely monitoring weather forecasts and river levels and will issue further flood warnings if necessary. Please be aware of your surroundings and keep up to date with the current situation.

"This message will be updated in 8 hours, or as the situation changes."

Lancashire County Council previously said: "Storm Dennis is forecast to hit Lancashire on Saturday. Our highways teams will be working hard to deal with any impacts. Please stay safe and check @metoffice weather warnings."
