A BID is being made to allocate a former quarry, close to the site of a Neolithic village, as a gypsy and traveller transit site.

Council bosses in Rossendale are seeking views over the proposals for Little Tooter Quarry at Sharneyford, near Bacup.

Part of the emerging Rossendale Local Plan, the consultation will be open until the end of business on February 25.

A Rossendale Council spokesman said: "All duly made comments that relate to planning matters will be considered by the planning inspectors who have been appointed to examine the plan."

Neighbours have previously voiced concerns that the old quarry and surrounding land, where arrowheads were once found, has become a wildlife haven.

One plan for Little Tooter, submitted to the county council in 2000, would have seen a waste paper dump formed there. Comments can be made on the transit plans by calling 01706 217777 or by e-mailing forwardplanning@rossendalebc.gov.uk
