WE ran a story last week about a Wetherspoon pub which put up a sign saying it was limiting parents to two alcoholic drinks each if they had children with them.

This story sparked a massive discussion online among Lancashire Telegraph readers.

The rule came to light after a picture was taken of a poster in a pub in Kent.

The poster, which has since been taken down, read: "As part of our licensing it is our responsibility to ensure that we are protecting children from harm.

"Therefore adults in charge of children will be allowed to have one alcoholic drink and a further alcoholic drink with a sit-down meal."

Here is what the LT readers thought of the rule.

Nicola Reay said: "I agree with this. If you really wanted to drink more than two you shouldn't be with your children well under at least 16s.

"What if they finish two and got into a car with them? Pubs should really start having boxes and breathalysers and if you blow over 30 you don't get your keys back."

Victoria Mac said "Two tops (shandy) is more than enough if you having a meal with family, looks like another publicity stunt this to be honest haha."

On the rule, which is enforced on the manager's discretion, a Wetherspoon spokesman said: "There is a guideline, though not a policy, that we will serve the adult a maximum of two alcoholic drinks with their meal.

"The reason is that we don't want children being unruly in the pubs and parents thinking they can continue to drink while this happens."

It has been a crime since 1902 to be drunk in charge of a child under the age of seven in a public place.

The offence can be punished by a fine or up to a month in jail.

Em Crosland said: "Never taken my eldest in a pub and wont be doing with toddler either.

"Not a place where kids should be.

"I find it really irresponsible when I see parents in pubs with kids."

Donna Morgan said: "I think it's sad that this has to be enforced.

"To be fair I've been in the Postal Order (Blackburn's town centre Wetherspoon) late at night to see kids with tablets at a table of drunk adults.

"It was uncomfortable to watch, however playing devils advocate I've been to a spoons which was actually very nice for food with family in the day for a meal to be told the whole group wasn't permitted more than two drinks each.

"Why would the whole table be penalised because there are children at the table?

"Don't serve food and act like a family eatery if this is the rule.

"It also wasn't made clear to use before we ordered."
