A 29-YEAR-OLD man businessman was shot dead in Pakistan last week, according to reports.

Jahangir Hussain ran a takeaway in Blackburn and died after he was attacked in Jhelum on Thursday morning.

Mr Hussain is believed to have been from Little Harwood but spent most of his time in Pakistan while his brother owns a takeaway in Rawtenstall.

Reports say that he was attacked as he left his mother’s home in the Punjab. She was also shot but survived the attack.

Police have confirmed a murder investigation has been launched.

Blackburn MP Kate Hollern said: “I was horrified to hear about this incident and Mr Hussain’s sister has contacted me for assistance.

“I am liaising with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and understand that the matter is being handled by their murder and manslaughter team. I am expecting updates.”

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “Our staff are supporting the family of a British man following his death in Jhelum, and are in contact with the Pakistani police”.

Cllr Hussain Akhtar, who represents the Shear Brow and Corporation Park ward, said: “I have heard the person lives in Little Harwood.

“I was very shocked when I heard about it and I feel for the family. “It is unacceptable to hear that someone has been shot and I hope the person who committed the offence gets the punishment they deserve.

“I hope that the British ambassador is intervening and trying to get justice. “The community is in shock and I have heard he owned a takeaway.”
