A lorry's roof peeled back like a sardine tin in November 1979 when it got wedged under a railway bridge in Accrington.
The driver, Ernest Ousby from Colne, escaped unhurt, but cutting equipment had to be used to free the box van as police redirected traffic for two hours.
The van had cleared one of two bridges but was five inches too high for the second.
