A 'body' found in the River Irwell by a passer-by turned out to be a mannequin.

On Saturday afternoon, a concerned Waterfoot resident contacted the police and uploaded a picture to Twitter of what looked like a body floating in the water.

The resident said: "I've seen this in the River Irwell on Bacup Road at the bridge opposite Beverley Alexandra and behind Waterfoot Aquatics.

"May be a mannequin but I can’t be sure."

Emergency services including the ambulance and the fire service were called to the location as concern on social media escalated.

Posting on Twitter at 1.15am on Sunday, Lancashire Police said: "With the assistance of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service we can confirm that it was a Mannequin and the incident has been resolved."
