AN engineer from East Lancs has been named among the country's most promising apprentices.

Abigail Stansfield, from Clitheroe, who works for BAE Systems' air division, picked up a bronze medal in the WorldSkills UK finals.

Her recognition, at the Birmingham NEC gathering, came in the CNC milling section.

One of her colleagues, Jake Room, from Preston, collected a silver in the CNC turning discipline at the same time.

Their exploits could see them picked for the WorldSkills Shanghai conference in 2020.

Abbie, who joined the firm in 2016, said: "I'm really happy with what I have achieved and all the hard work has paid off. I can't wait for the next stages, with the possibility of going to Shanghai."

Nigel Davies, principal of BAE's Academy for Skills and Knowledge in Samlesbury, added: "This is an excellent achievement for Abbie and Jake, who have demonstrated outstanding skills and knowledge at WorldSkills UK.

"We are delighted to see them being acknowledged as some of the best apprentices in the UK."
