WHO says 13 is an unlucky number?

Well it certainly was not the case in December 1979 as 13 people passed the Blackburn Area Road Safety Association's advanced driving test.

An appeal was made for more interest in road safety as the number of people attending the course dropped.

Tom Wood, founder patron of the association said: "About 98 per cent of road accidents are caused by human error - this test in essential.

"There has been a decline in the number of people on the course recently, and it could be the cost of petrol.

"I don't know how many people can manage on the roads these days. You can't be too advanced in driving," said Mr Wood, pictured second left back row, with other officials and some of the successful drivers.

The advanced course started in 1964, involves lectures and instruction and is run on the same lines as the police test.
